Key Speakers

An overview of some of the key-speakers at the Conference:

Mr. Stavros L. Tripis, Founder of Tuna Temple Inc.  Tuna Temple Inc.  is in North America one of the leading suppliers of Ultra Low Temperature ( minus 60 celsius) or SuperFrozen tuna. Now that smoked tuna is completely banned for import in the European Union, mr. Tripis, who is a pioneer in this innovative business segment,  will talk about the question if Super Frozen tuna can fill the gap in the market that is being created by the EU import-ban on smoked tuna. Future prospects and logistic challenges will also be discussed.

Mr. Juan Ronco Zapatero,  Principal Administrator, Markets and Trade for the European Commission, Directorate-General for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs. Mr. Ronco is directly involved in the EU negotiations on tuna fisheries subsidies, import duties and quotas; and will explain the European Union’s position on future import duties for tuna, quota systems, providing an insight on the changes of a Free Trade Pact, as well as the ACP system, the Andean agreement and the WTO negotiations.

Dr. Alain Fonteneau
,  Researcher & Scientist at the IRD - Unité de Recherche n° 109 (THETIS), Centre de Recherche Halieutique Méditerranéenne et Tropicale will be giving a presentation on the complete global tuna supply situation, the development of the tuna stocks of all major tuna species as are Skipjack, Yellowfin, Bigeye, and Bonito Del Norte, and Albacore as well as farmed and wild catches of Bluefin; providing a realistic scientific overview of the real and false problems or threats that the various tuna stocks and ecosystems worldwide are currently facing.

Mrs. Katherine Short, Fisheries Officer of the Global Marine Programme WWF International will be explaining how the stocks of all major tuna species are developing, and what management measures should be taken according to WWF; not only about the already in focus Bluefin species, but also more about Skipjack, Yellowfin, Bigeye, and Bonito Del Norte.

Mr. Roberto Mielgo Bregazzi, CEO of the Advanced Tuna Ranching Technologies (ATRT, S.L.) will be presenting the state of the tuna farming in Europe, as well as the future of the sector and the species; providing insight to whether tuna farming will be a solution to the declining tuna stocks.

Mr. Antonio García Gomez, Representative of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography(IEO), Spanish Office for Science and Technology (SOST) will be explaining the latest developments in the area of tuna hatching in Europe, the progress the IEO is making in the REPRODOTT project, and what the other developments are in this field in Japan, Australia and South America, providing insight to what the fertilization of tuna eggs in captivity can mean for the future of the species and the global tuna business.

Mrs. Marie Christine Monfort, Marketing Consultant of the International Seafood Marketing Expert will be giving a presentation on the retail market trend on eco-labelling; the reaction of fishing and distribution companies to the eco-labelling requirements; the advantages for fisheries, the implications of the policies and the financial economic consequences as well as other means for responsible fishing.

Ms. Helga Josupeit, Fishery Industry Officer of the FAO Fishery Industries Division will be presenting the FAO’s view on the future price trend of Yellowfin and Skipjack tuna, impact of the catch reduction and stocks development as well as fuel price influences on the future prices of frozen yellowfin tuna loins and steaks and of canned tuna.

Mr. Juan Corrales Garavilla, Sales & Marketing Director of the Tuna Canning Group Conservas Garavilla, S.A. (Isabel), who will provide insight to the latest trends in the European heat preserved tuna market, supplying a broader focus on heat preserved tuna products (aluminium pouch, jars, retortable plastic jars a.o.), also the supply and consumption data on various EU markets.

Mr. Bernard Leveau, General Director of Multivac France, associated member of the FAO, and activity coordinator in the fish and seafood sector of the Multivac group will be introducing the latest innovations in  the packing  of fresh and frozen tuna, as  well as the future packaging materials and techniques.

Mr. Adrian Carril, Commercial Manager of Hermasa Canning Technology who will be giving a presentation on the latest and future innovations in heat preserved tuna packaging, reviewing recently introduced new forms of packaging in metal and aluminium cans, carton and in alu-pouches. The innovations in filling methods, improvements in cooking times and the challenges new innovations are facing.

Dr. Dan Horovitz, Lawyer and Counsel of International Trade Council & Advocate HD&Co. will be giving a presentation about the rules that the EU applies to imports of canned tuna from the ASEAN countries, and the new principles that will apply to all trade, including the tuna trade, between the two regional blocks once the forthcoming Free Trade Area (FTA) Agreement is concluded and enters into force. He will highlight the present EU duty and quotas regime with regard to ASEAN imports, in comparison with the parallel situation that applies to EU imports from other world regions.
