Mr. Karmenu Vella is the European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

He is of Maltese nationality. Married with two children.

Mr. Vella holds a Bachelor's degree in Architecture and Civil Engineering and a Master's degree in Tourism Management.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Vella was Group Coordinator for the Labour Party Parliamentary Group, Minister of Tourism and Aviation, as well as Minister of Industry, Minister of public Works and Member of the Maltese Parliament.

As architect, he has also held the position of Director in various differente companies.
