Stefaan Depypere
DG MARE, Director for International Ocean Governance and Sustainable Fisheries

Stefaan Depypere was born in Kortrijk, Belgium, in 1955. He is married and has 3 children.

He graduated in Applied Economics (Antwerp University, cL, 1976) and as Commercial Engineer (EHSAL, Brussels, mcL, 1982).

From 1976 to 1978 Stefaan Depypere worked as an assistant at the University in Antwerp (Accountancy, Management, and Finance) before joining the army in 1978 where he was Commander of a Tank Platoon. After military service in 1979 he joined the Credit Department of the National Bank of Belgium before moving to the European Commission in 1986. In the Commission, he worked on Competition, External Relations, Trade and Maritime affairs.

Career at the European Commission:

1986 - 1990 DG Competition (Monitoring of State Aid)
   
1990 - 1994 DG External Relations, first in the North South Directorate (Economic Cooperation with Asia, Latin America, Mediterranean) – and from 1993 as Head of Sector for Financial and Budgetary Affairs)
   
1994 - 1997 DG Competition, first as Deputy Head of Unit for International Aspects and from 1996 as Head of a Task Force responsible for monitoring aid in the new Länder of Germany
   
1997 - 2001 DG External Relations as Head of Unit for Budget of the External Service
   
2001 - 2005 DG Competition, first as Head of Unit for Resources and then from 2003 as Head of Unit for State Aid (Broadcasting, Telecom, Health, Sport & Culture)
   
2005 - 2007 DG Trade as Director for Human Resources, Interinstitutional Relations, Communications Policy and Information Technology
   
2007 - 2008 DG Trade as Director for Resources, Economic Analysis and Strategic Planning
   
2008 - 2011 DG Trade as Director for Trade Defence
   
2011 - DG Mare as Director for International Affairs and Markets. Since 2017, the scope of the directorate has been enlarged and now covers Ocean Governance and Sustainable Fisheries (including Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) combat). Since 2013, Stefaan Depypere is also chairman of ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas).


Stefaan Depypere has been a lecturer on “International Monetary Relations” at ICHEC ISC in Brussels (1991-2005) and a regular guest lecturer on "EU Competitiveness", "International Relations" and “Competition Policy” at the MBA programme of the University of Antwerp.
