Martin Hall
Chief Scientist, Tuna-Dolphin Program, IATTC (Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission)

Dr. Martin Alberto Hall is Chief Scientist and Head of the Tuna-Dolphin program of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) for the past 25 years. He has a Ph.D. in Fisheries from the University of Washington, Seattle and dedicated his academic work to the mitigation of accidental by-catch of non targeted species, such as marine turtles, during commercial fishing activities.

In the Tuna-Dolphin program, Dr. Hall had several achievements such as the expansion of international observer program from 3% to 100% between 1984 and 1992, and adherence of all nations fishing in the region. He is in charge of managing the second largest observer program in the world. In addition, as head of the program, he contributed immensely to the identification of the major factors causing or increasing dolphin mortality in the fishery.

As a consequence, Dr. Hall was part of the development and implementation of a fishers training program to improve performance in reducing dolphin mortality. His work contributed to reduce dolphin mortality from over 130.000 in 1986 to less than 900 in 2006, while maintaining the fishing operations at a high level.

Dr. Hall is natural from Argentina and currently lives in La Jolla, California. Member of several conservational committees with special focus in reducing by-catch, in 2001 he was also a member of the Standards Committee, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
