James Joseph
Chairman, ISSF Scientific Committee

Dr. Joseph was the driving force behind the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) for 35 years until his retirement as Director of the IATTC in 1999. He now serves as ISSF’s main point of contact with the scientific community studying tuna and related marine issues. Dr. Joseph also serves as an advisor and consultant to a number of governments, international organizations, and private and public institutions institutions.

In addition to his time at IATTC, Dr. Joseph worked for the California Department of Fish and Game, the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries, and served as a visiting scientist with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in New Zealand. He served as an Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington and at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. He has served as either chairman or member on numerous advisory committees, task forces, and consultative groups in the United States and elsewhere dealing with marine science and conservation, including, inter alia, those of the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the United Nations, and FAO. He has also lectured widely on subjects relating to marine research and resource conservation at conventions, universities, and institutions throughout the world. He has published more than 100 books and articles on fisheries science, resource conservation, and management, most of which deal with tuna.

Dr. Joseph’s achievements have earned him many honors, including the degree of Docteur Honoris Causa, Université de Bretagne, Brest, France, Distinguished Alumnus Award, Humboldt State University, Nautilus Award, Marine Technological Society, the Roger Revelle Award, San Diego Oceans Foundation, Condecoration orden Antonio Jose De Sucre, Government of Venezuela, Al Mérito Pesquero Medal, Presented by the President of Ecuador. In addition, the IATTC, while under Dr. Joseph’s directorship was selected as the recipient of the Carl L. Sullivan Fishery Conservation Award of the American Fisheries Society in 1994.

Dr. Joseph also holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees at Humboldt State University (1956 and 1958) and a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Washington (1968).
