James Weerawardena
Owner of Tuna King
James was the first person to introduce fresh tuna loins to UK, way back in 1989. He was also the first person to export fresh tuna to Europe from Sri Lanka as Sri Lanka was not fishing Yellow fin tuna on a commercial scale prior to James's involvement in fishing.
James was the founder of "sustainable tuna catching by Artisanal method" in Sri Lanka where he organised and trained fishermen based in Southern part of Sri Lanka to gear small boats to conduct Multi Day Fishing Trips to catch Yellow fin tuna, by using Multi Hook Short Line System.
James Weerawardena also introduce cooling and preservation on board methods to artisanal fishermen so that a greater portion of tuna catches can be exported as fresh and thus improve fishermen revenue as well as reduce wastage. James also introduce on board traceability system.
James was also the first person to introduce fresh tuna from Sri Lanka to multiple retailers such as Tesco in the UK.
Tuna King is the only company that directly supplies fresh tuna fish to multiple retailers with a fully integrated supply chain where from catching to direct supply to multiple retailer without an unbroken chain. It is also a 100% sustainable sourced tuna company.
Tuna king is to introduce a traceability code where a consumer can trace back any "TUNA KING BRANDED" fish fillet to a single boat that caught that particular fish.
TUNA KING is working in partnership with Friend Of The Sea to make all tuna supplies derived from 100% sustainable catching methods. This a very difficult and a bold move but necessary to save our seas and not only preach but also be a true Friend Of The Sea.
